| Board members met at the Olive Garden
Restaurant near Fairfield Mall on Thursday, June 29, 2000. This was to be a special
meeting, not to just conduct the normal business affairs of the chapter, but also to meet
and greet Cheryl Stringer, our Alumni Office representative. Virtually all board members
were on hand for this festive occasion. |

|
Cheryl has been on a fast
paced tour of Ohio, and was in Cincinnati before coming to Dayton. Apparently Prez
Randy Gallas directions were accurate enough for her to find her way to the Olive Garden.
After enjoying a sumptuous meal of Italian cuisine, we adjourned to Edie Krieder's home. |

|
| Never let it be said that the Olive
Garden stints on the portions of the food it serves. In fact, some of our group made
the most of the occasion by hoarding said portions of food. Note, for example, this
candid photo of Lou Sharp. |

|
| After everyone was comfortably
ensconced at Edie and Bob Kreider's home, Cheryl indicated she was in Dayton to find out
how she and the Alumni Association might be of help to us. She is responsible for
acting as the liaison for 33 chapters in states neighboring Pennsylvania, and extending as
far as Orlando. She indicated that, in her view, "having fun" is one of
the most important characteristics of a chapter. |
| . |
| When prompted by Cheryl for input, Bob
Kreider asked if there might not be a more equitable way to distribute football tickets
maybe once in five years give our chapter a shot at some good tickets.
The quality of the seating at games is what we'd like to see improved. What
followed was a general discussion about the poor seating at Ohio State games. Cheryl
indicated she will check with the Athletic Department to see what might be done. |
|
... . |
| She also said that Special Project
Grants are now available to support special projects that chapters might want to
undertake. The grants can range from $200 to $3,000. They are not multi-year
in nature, and are approved on an annual basis. |
| . |
| Marguerite Sharp asked how our chapter
might become better known to Penn State newcomers to the Dayton area. Cheryl
responded that we can request a data base of names of alumni who are known by the Alumni
Association to have recently moved into the local area. It was generally acknowledged that
attracting new members is one of our chapter's biggest challenges, despite the fact that
we send New Arrival Letters and try to add to our list of e-mail addresses. |
| . |
| Cheryl announced that Regional Training
will be conducted in Cleveland this fall, and chapter presidents and board members will be
invited. The objective of the training is to get the chapters together to talk about
common problems and possible solutions. October 14 is the target date for the
training, and many board members indicated a desire to attend. |
|
. |
| In other Board business, it was
confirmed that the Freshman Sendoff Party will be on Wednesday, August 2, at the Kreider
residence. Edie will send out invitations. |
| ... |
| We'll again participate in a Channel 16
Pledge Drive. The date is August 13, from 5 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. Mark Dowd says
we'll need 12 people, and that he'll notify our membership via e-mail. |
|
. |
| The football bus trip this year will be
to Indiana, on Saturday, October 28th. Unlike previous years, gametime will be 7:00
P.M. EST (6:00 P.M. CST). Edie Kreider says that the lateness of the game
notwithstanding, she'll still whip up a batch of her famous Bloody Mary's for the trip.
We're planning on having 40 tickets, and a total price of $60 per person to cover
the game ticket and the bus trip. |
| . |
| We have an ongoing quest to see if
we'll continue using Wallabies as our Saturday afternoon rendezvous point for Penn State
football games. The Fox & Hound, a sports bar south of town, is being considered
as a replacement. |
| . |
| The next Board Meeting will be on
Wednesday, August 23, at Randy Gallas' home. |
