NITTANY NOTES - JULY 2005

       .
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
This year was a banner for our chapter. We have made some changes to help our organization grow. The Board of Directors recently endorsed a 5-year Strategic Plan. Our hope is to introduce some new opportunities and programs that will make your chapter more enjoyable and active. If you have any ideas of things you would like to see changed or activities that you think we should become involved in, please drop me an email or call me, 426-7632 or jjglaser@earthlink.net

Our yearly elections were held at the Annual Banquet on April 30 at the NCR Country Club. Along with the officers, we now have 13 members on the board of directors. We still have 5 vacancies for those of you who want to become more active in our programs. You can see all the members in living color on our web page.

My goals this year include:
  • Increase our local membership as well as encouraging more of you to become lifetime members of the alumni association.
  • Improve the quality of local recruiting at college fairs by hosting special information training for chapter members.
  • Continue to earn recognition for our chapter and send representatives to the annual awards banquet at University Park. Last year we were winners of two awards and received special chapter recognition.
  • Participate in community activities such as Think TV (PBS) Auction and Habitat for Humanity. Let us spread Penn State cheer and help in our community.
  • Finally, it would be great to see more of you at our two social events; the Holiday Party and our Annual Banquet. The turnout for the banquet this year was fabulous.

STUDENT SEND-OFF/SUMMER SOIREE

The picnic will be held Wednesday, Aug 10th at 6:30 pm at the Kreider home. The chapter will supply burgers and dogs cooked to perfection by master chef Bob Kreider. Members are asked to bring a covered dish. We will recognize this year's two scholarship winners as well as area students and send them off to Penn State either for the first time or to return them to Happy Valley to continue their college experience. Please join us one and all. To RSVP, get directions, coordinate menu items, or for any other information, contact Edie at 937-429-5501 or kreiderfam@prodigy.net or John at 937-426-7632 or jjglaser@earthlink.net.

CARL STRAVINSKI SCHOLARSHIPS

We are happy to announce that Christopher Wyckoff of Troy and Kevin Howorth of Dayton are recipients of our Chapter's scholarships for the upcoming school year. We will award each of them $1,300 and honor them at our annual Summer Picnic and Freshmen Send-off on August 10, 2005.

Christopher, a graduate of Troy High School, is majoring in aerospace engineering, and will graduate from Penn State this fall. He is currently a co-op at Sikorsky Aircraft in West Palm Beach, Florida, in the flight test engineering department. In addition to being an excellent student, 3.50 GPA, he has his private pilot license. He was involved with the Pennsylvania Special Olympics, was secretary of the national aerospace honor society Sigma Gamma Tau and a member of the Penn State club swim team.

Kevin is a graduate of the Miami Valley School, majoring in engineering with a current GPA of 3.71. Kevin is currently working at WPAFB in a research department studying electromagnetism. At Penn State, Kevin participated in the Youth Service Opportunities Project, intramural tennis and football. He is a member of the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience. Kevin plans to graduate in the spring of 2008.

Your support of this fund will allow us to continue to assist our students, and to increase the amount and /or number of scholarships we can award. The fund is endowed through the Pennsylvania State University.

CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The home page for on-line giving is: http://www.MakeADifference.psu.edu. Yes, you can make a chapter contribution online. It needs to be done by picking "other" and listing the name or allocation code for the endowment. For our chapter it is the CARL STRAVINSKI ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP OF THE PENN STATE CLUB OF GREATER DAYTON. The allocation code is SXXDY. Either the name or the allocation code will work.
