Bringing Happy Valley to the Miami Valley

Nittany Notes

Greater Dayton and the Miami Valley Penn State Alumni Association

President’s Note:

Hello my name is Victor Folwarczny (Math-68).  I am your new Chapter President following in Randy Gallas’s footsteps. He was our fearless leader for the previous two years. I will try to do as good a job as he did. As a chapter member and board member since 1994, I was vice president, I am a volunteer PSU college recruiter in the Dayton area, and I am an exuberant participant in our chapter’s football parties and bus trips. Please feel free to contact me, if you have any questions or concerns. I can be reached at (937) 258-0924 or at vfolwarczn@aol.com. Some additional tidbits about myself:

I grew up in McKeesport Pa., a city southeast of Pittsburgh. My first 2 years as a PSU student were at the McKeesport Campus. I am an avid runner but not fast, and have run 4 Marathons: Columbus, Pittsburgh, Air Force, and Flying Pig. My profession is Programmer/Analyst and I am currently employed by GE Capital- Monogram Credit Services(Private Label Credit Cards) in Information Technologies - Database group. I am a Steelers fan and when I can I’ll be at the Casablanca Club in Centerville on Sundays cheering them on to victory? – always positive but realistic.

Web Site:

Be sure to check out our chapter's WEB site at www.psualumnidayton.org. Bob Gehman, chapter member, is the designer and administrator. It is a fantastic site with information about the board members (including pictures), our activities, and other great tidbits of data along with links to other pertinent sites. If something perks your interest in this newsletter, try the website for further information.

Freshman Sendoff Picnic:

On August 14th at 6:30PM at the home of Edie & Bob Kreider we will have our annual Freshman Sendoff/Summer Picnic. This year we have 10 local students starting their college careers at Happy Valley. We also have 17 returning students. So come out and meet some of the board and membership as well as these gifted students and their families. The new students are: Margaret Kridler from Springfield, Jeff Kreider from Beavercreek, Jeremy Schrimpf from Springfield, Amanda Steinke from Dayton, Sheena Thompson from Fairborn, Dallas Slagel from Huber Heights, John Romer from Dayton, Allen Eslinger from Centerville, Jenna Gallas from Beavercreek, and Richard Williams from Springfield. The club and Kreiders supply the meat to grill, and everybody brings a dish to share. Contact Edie at kreiderfam@prodigy.net or call her at 429-5501 if you are planning to attend. Please leave a phone number for her to contact you.

30th Anniversary:

In 2001 this Chapter became 30 years old and in celebration of this feat we have made available desk cube paper holders with our club logo embossed on the side. The cost of each is $10.00 and they can be obtained from Edie Kreider, Vic Folwarczny, or Randy Gallas. They will also be available at the Football Parties at the Fox and Hound, in Centerville. Having the cube at home or work is not only useful when you need to jot a note, it also lets others know that PSU is alive in the Miami Valley. Our logo displays the PSU Nittany Lion along with the Wright Flyer.

Chapter Scholarships:

The Chapter congratulates the winners of the two Carl Stravinski $1100 competitive scholarships that we presented this year. Lori Bazzel (Senior) and Steve Kreider (Junior) came out on top out of 8 applicants. Their scholarship and activities, along with their written essay titled "Why I Recommend Penn State to Prospective College Students " earned them the award. I want to thank Mark Dowd for, again, taking care of all the details of the scholarship award process. A job well done.

Donations are welcome. Your support of this fund will allow us to continue to assist our students, and to increase the amount of or the number of scholarships we can award. Over several years we have grown from one scholarship to two. The fund is endowed through the Pennsylvania State University.

Spring Banquet & the Nittany Lion:

We had a great spring banquet this year, with 33 attendees. Jackie Esposito, PSU archivist, was the speaker. She entertained those in attendance with history of Penn State and appropriately the Nittany Lion Mascot. You see, we are extremely proud to have the son of chapter members Jerry and Collette Zollars as the Nittany Lion. A big RRRRRROAR to Michael Zollars, a 1998 graduate of Beavercreek High School. He is a 5th year PSU student majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Michael won the chapter’s Stravinski scholarship for the 2000/2001 school year.

Football Parties:

Every Saturday during the Penn State football season the Fox and Hound in Centerville becomes an extension of Beaver Stadium. Penn State Football fans, not just chapter members, can root their beloved Lions to victory. The first game is August 31 with Central Florida. So put on your Blue and White attire, get your voice into shape (practice the Alma Mater), and come to Centerville for good football (almost all of the time) and fellowship (all of the time). Go STATE.

Football Tickets:

We have 40 tickets to the PSU/OSU football game October 26 at Ohio State. The chapter is preparing for a raucous road trip. We have the bus reserved and by the time we board the bus the tailgate goodies and libations will be ready for the short trek to Columbus. The short drive will certainly be fun and we will have several hours to tail gate at the game. There will be time to experience the PSU Alumni tent or some of the other venues at Ohio State. The cost is $66.00 per person, which includes the cost of the ticket, the cost of the bus, pop/soda, beer & alcohol, and some food. The tickets are $45.00 but are only available as part of the package.

New Board Member :

Welcome to our new board member Dave Romanko (Industrial Eng.-75). A chapter member for 3 years. The following is the information he has offered about himself:

"I grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of Penn Hills and am also a big Steelers fan. I have lived in Dayton for 9 years. In fact, I had several opportunities for jobs in 1993 but I chose Dayton because it was in the middle of the Big Ten Conference and the Bengals play the Steelers every year in Cincinnati. I have belonged to other PSU Alumni chapters around the country including Miami and Memphis. I work at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and you can find my desk in the basement of Building 266 by looking for the PSU "shrine" in my cubicle. This tends to incite the Buckeye fans surrounding me and definitely adds to the excitement of the football season."

As board member Dave has volunteered to be the contact person with Public Television Channels 14/16. He will be arranging for the chapter presence at the Channel 16 Auction and Pledge Drive.

Board Meeting:

The next Board Meeting is on Wednesday, October 9th. It will be held at the president’s residence at 707 Bellaire Avenue, Dayton. All members are welcome to attend the meetings. Membership to the board is open to any chapter member. The board meetings occur about 4 times a year. Chapter membership is $15.00/single and $20.00/family per year.

Looking forward to a great year.

Please join us.
