Through the
organizational initiative and financial contributions of Carl
Stravinski, 41, Past President of the Penn State Chapter of Greater Dayton, a
scholarship fund was established by the chapter in 1986. As a fitting honor to
Carl's efforts, the fund
subsequently was named after
him. It should be noted that Carl and wife Roni have not only
maintained close ties with our chapter, but have been — and continue to
be — annual contributors to the scholarship fund.
The Carl Stravinski Scholarship Fund is now endowed through the Pennsylvania
State University Alumni Association and provides two annual scholarships in the amount of
$1,500 each. To date, the Penn State
Chapter of Dayton has awarded fifteen scholarships totaling $21,700.
The chapter
makes ongoing contributions to the fund and continues to solicit tax deductible
donations. See below
for information on
how you can make an on-line contribution to the Carl Stravinski
Scholarship Fund.
In order to qualify for the scholarship, students must be from
the Dayton area and enrolled at Penn State. The winners must show contribution to the
community, be academically proficient, demonstrate leadership, and participate in
extra-curricular activity. Candidates must also be able to express their
views on a selected topic via submission of a written essay.
We want to congratulate our most recent winners,
Meghan Sherman and Alyssa Bates. Each of these two young women was awarded a
$1,500 scholarship and honored at our annual Summer Picnic and Freshmen Send-off
on August 6, 2008.
Meghan, a graduate of Tecumseh High School, is majoring in
history with a current GPA
of 3.45. She is a member of the Blue and White Society, and is
active in Campus Ministry. Meghan holds leadership positions in the
Pathfinders Club and the International Student Organization. She is
actively involved in various Army ROTC activities and will be commissioned
as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army upon graduation. She plans on graduating from Penn State in
the spring of 2011.
Alyssa is a graduate of Fairborn
High School, and is majoring in meteorology. Her current GPA is
3.73. She is a member of the Earth and Mineral Sciences Student Council,
and is actively involved with Penn State's Campus Weather Service and
Earth and Mineral Sciences THON Committee. Alyssa holds leadership
positions with the Happy Valley Chapter of the National Federation of the
Blind of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Association of Blind
Students. She plans to graduate in the spring of 2012.
