Through the
organizational initiative and financial contributions of the late Carl
Stravinski, 41, Past President of the Penn State Chapter of Greater Dayton, a
scholarship fund was established by the chapter in 1986. As a fitting honor to
Carl's efforts, the fund
subsequently was named after
him. It should be noted that Carl and wife Roni maintained close ties with our
chapter through the years. Roni continues to be an annual
contributor to the scholarship fund.
The Carl Stravinski Scholarship Fund is now endowed through the Pennsylvania
State University Alumni Association and provides two annual scholarships in the amount of
$1,750 each. The chapter
makes ongoing contributions to the fund and continues to solicit tax deductible
donations. See below
for information on
how you can make an on-line contribution to the Carl Stravinski
Scholarship Fund.
In order to qualify for the scholarship, students must be from
the Dayton area and enrolled at Penn State. The winners must show contribution to the
community, be academically proficient, demonstrate leadership, and participate in
extra-curricular activity. Candidates must also be able to express their
views on a selected topic via submission of a written essay.
We want to congratulate our most recent winners,
Matt Abourezk and Chelsea Dowd. Each of these two young people was awarded a
$1,750 scholarship and honored at our annual Summer Picnic and Freshmen Send-off
on August 3, 2011.
Matt is from Centerville and
graduated from Centerville High School. He is entering his junior year
this fall, is majoring in chemistry, and is carrying a 3.95 grade point
average.
Chelsea hails from Tipp City and is a
Tippecanoe High School graduate. This fall she is entering her sophomore
year, is majoring in secondary education, and is carrying a 3.7 grade point
average.
