It shouldn't surprise anyone that
our chapter has its fair share of "hams" — those folks who
wouldn't miss an opportunity to be in the limelight. Channel 16's
Annual Auction and the chance to be in the studio and on-camera from
time to time brings 'em out in droves. Alas! No such
opportunity this time. Instead, we were assigned to work the back
office telephones making calls to confirm winning bids.
OK, maybe we couldn't be
on-camera but we were promised a lot of fun and all the free eats we
wanted. And so it was that Edie Kreider, Debbie Downes, John
Glaser, and Bob Gehman made their way to the Think TV Studios on April
10, 2008, to staff the telephones in the back office. Kudos to
John for recruiting such willing workers and coordinating all the
arrangements with Think TV.

You can feel the intensity, can't
you? Such focus! Such concentration! John, Edie, and
Debbie are obviously giving it their all. On the other hand, Bob
avoids his telephone and spends time aimlessly shuffling through an
alphabetical listing of bidders; occasionally pausing long enough to
snap a candid photo, as he did here.

A well-stocked serving line
brings miles of smiles to Debbie and John. Each year there seems to be
an expanding assortment and quantity of food goodies. For some of
us though, the pièce de résistance at the auction
is — and always will be — Sliders from White Castle!

Time to relax and enjoy the
fruits of their labor. We're not sure, but it looks like Edie is
wondering how much longer we'll have to work.

Back on the job at last, John
listens intently as Bob (who by this time has memorized the alphabetical
listing) points out the difference between the listing's green-shaded
areas and its non-shaded areas.

We've included this picture to
show you some of the other volunteers in the back office that
evening. We also see Marie patiently resolving one of the many
challenges she faced to keep the paperwork flowing quickly and
accurately. All in all, it was a busy night and the Penn Staters
left the studio with a sense of pride in their support of this service
project.
